Why Your Story Matters
It is yours uniquely
Nobody else can tell your story, and that's a big deal. Sure, they can tell some version of it. But the only person capable of sharing your lessons and revelations - the good the bad and the ugly of it all - is YOU.
As a life coach, your story is your calling card. It's also your unique intellectual property.
Oftentimes, we take this for granted. We tend to overlook what seems "obvious" inside our own heads. When we're trying to come up with something to share with prospective coaching clients, it can be easy to search outside ourselves for wisdom. But when we're always on the hunt to find something new to say, we forget we've already got the most powerful insights hidden in plain sight. Your personal take on things is embedded inside your own life experiences.
It can help other people
The sh*t you’ve been through and obstacles you’ve overcome matter. In fact, those very experiences may be the reason why you decided to become a coach! Sharing those experiences can serve as a beacon of inspiration and hope for others.
When you tell personal stories as a life coach, it’s not just so that people can get to know more about you. The right stories will also hold up a mirror to your audience in a way that allows them to see themselves inside the narrative. When your story touches in on an aspect of our shared humanity, it resonates. It's like the reader is able to see a piece of themselves and their own life in what you’re sharing.
How Your Stories Can Change Lives
Empowerment
Empowerment is not that easy to inject in other people’s lives. If you think one coaching session is enough to empower your client, you got that wrong. This is the very reason why your story matters - because it is that life ingredient that helps empower others. It is that thing that reminds people they are not alone. That they, too, can do something great, something inspiring, and build something good. Most importantly, your story will help empower others to unearth and embrace their own stories too.
Builds connection
The best coaching relationships are built on a foundation of trust. To that end, there's no “right way” to tell your story.
Know who you are, and embody your unique style. If you’re a high energy person, don’t dial it down to librarian mode. If you’re prone to cursing like a sailor, let it rip. Model the same vulnerability that you’ll be asking of your clients as they seek to live from their own truth. And remember: people will hire you because they resonate with your presence. So show them who you really are!
Inspires others to find their voice
When you tell personal stories as a life coach, it’s not just so that people can learn more about you. Good stories hold up a mirror to your audience in a way that allows them to see themselves inside the narrative. When your story touches in on an aspect of shared humanity, it resonates. It's like the reader is able to see a piece of themselves and their own life in what you’re sharing. And when they see you using your voice, it can be a powerful source of inspiration.
