A Day In The Life of a Business Coach
In this episode, Noelle and Pam discuss how she shifted from a career in sales to entrepreneurship. Listen in as she recounts how she adjusted to self-employment, launched her own branding agency, and eventually transitioned into coaching fellow business leaders and entrepreneurs.
Fun fact: Pam didn’t set out to become a coach. In fact, she actively resisted the idea at first! It was only after her own business coach repeatedly pointed out how she was actively using the skills of coaching as a Creative Director in her branding business that she began to consider the possibility.
So what took her so long to make the leap?
When Pam looked around at the coaches she knew in her community, she simply didn’t see herself reflected there. The business coaches she knew were all men, and the women were mainly specializing in spirituality and personal development. She was interested in supporting others as they built their businesses, but didn’t have any models in the industry that she could truly relate to. As a result, she found it difficult to picture herself as a coach.
Eventually, Pam decided to go ahead and explore coach training. What followed was a period of transition. For a while, she straddled two worlds: running her successful branding business, and launching her new business coaching practice. Eventually, it was time to choose, and she gradually shifted the balance in the direction of coaching.
“I became the business coach my mom needed.” - Pam Covarrubias
Pam chose to specialize in business coaching, and many of her early clients were Spanish speakers and Latina business owners. They reminded her of her mother, an entrepreneur who she realized would have benefited so much from having a coach. If she had, Pam is convinced that her mom's business would have thrived.
This realization inspires Pam to serve a diverse client base - including people like her own mom. With that said, Pam welcomes clients from all backgrounds and business types!
Clients who work with Pam are typically looking for support with the “next step” in their business. Some originally launched as a side-gig or a hobby and want to step it up. Others are hoping to take what they do to the next level.
Pam brings her background in branding coupled with her experience as a small business owner to support her clients to:
- Step into their power
- Develop their branding
- Uncover their story
- Position themselves in a way that is unique AND profitable
In this way, Pam overlays her specialized business expertise with core coaching skills in order to best serve the client.
Rather than advising, she holds the client as the expert in their own business and life. This requires a combined approach, where she puts her coaching hat on in combination with her business-building roadmaps and tools, along with a somatic technique called EFT (Tapping). Pam chooses to include EFT in her toolkit because it helps to regulate and ground us when we’re feeling overwhelmed. It adds yet another layer to her unique approach and practice as a coach.
A Week In Pam’s World
There is no such thing as a “typical” day in Pam’s practice, but she does have a method for batching her work - one that leaves plenty of room for fun! Regardless of the day, what’s always the same are her morning and evening routines. Meditation and exercise are a must to start each day.
- Mondays start slow - it’s a time to plan the week, plan social media posts for the week, and clients in the afternoon/evening
- Tuesdays are filled with client calls
- Wednesdays are open mornings to provide space for deep, concentrated work followed by coaching calls in the evening
- Thursdays are podcast day - interviews, conversations and relational work
- She caps off the week with “Founder Fridays” - a day set aside for planning, checking in with accountability buddies, and other CEO work
FUN is a non-negotiable for Pam. She builds joy into the picture by paying close attention to how she's feeling. She frequently asks herself: “What’s my energy like today?” If she’s feeling tired, she makes time to rest. If she needs to clear her head, she takes a walk outside. If the work isn’t feeling fun, she builds in pleasure - a trip to the coffee shop, or a planned treat for later in the week!
