Tell us about before you became a coach.
I was a Deputy District Attorney for 14 years with the Los Angeles County D.A.'s Office where I specialized in child abuse, sex crimes, and domestic violence cases.
What happened in your life to push you to FINALLY become a coach?
After years of operating in a broken justice and going through my own journey of overcoming sexual shame, I knew I wanted to help women differently.
Going back to grad school to become a therapist.
What other options or pathways did you consider before signing up for Lumia?
Going back to grad school to become a therapist.
Why did you choose coach training with Lumia?
I'm a facts, data, and evidence kind of woman (it's the lawyer in me!). A few years before becoming a coach, I obtained a certificate in Positive Psychology, which really lit me up. I became fascinated with the research and neuroscience of how humans thrive. Lumia's evidence-based approach aligned perfectly with the type of coach I wanted to become.
What would have happened if you did not go through the Lumia program?
I would have stayed at the D.A.'s Office--burned out, and emotionally checked out.
What risks did you consider when thinking of becoming a coach?
When I made the leap from being a government attorney I definitely worried about the financial risks of full time entrepreneurship.
What fears did you have before joining Lumia?
None, actually!
What measurable benefits have you seen as a result of becoming a coach with Lumia?
Lumia convinced me I wanted to pursue coaching as a full-time career. Meeting John Kim changed the trajectory of my life: he offered me a teaching position at TAT Lab, and introduced me to my literary agent. I wouldn't have had this career springboard had I chosen a different coaching program.
How have you changed since coach training with Lumia? How has your business changed?
I'm no longer practicing law! Once I started practice coaching, I knew this was the next chapter in my career. But I had no clue how to run a business. Once I became certified, I enrolled in a business mastermind that helped me structure a sustainable full time coaching model. Since then, I've created a six-figure business coaching women one-on-one. I've also given a TEDx talk, signed a book deal, and have been hired to facilitate workshops internationally.
Get very clear on your niche. Sure, there are folks out there who are looking for a general life coach, but most people are looking for a result. Figure out what result you'll offer your clients. Do you want to help busy moms manage their stress? Do you want to help thirty-somethings heal after a break-up? The majority of successful coaches I've encountered have been very specific about 1. Who they help, and 2. What they help them do.
Also, understand that your coaching certification isn't the end of the road if you're looking to coach full time. If your goal is to change careers, it's likely you'll need additional business support and mentoring once you've gotten certified.
